Training for Instructors of Beginning and Intermediate Level Workshops

Workshops with Laurel True“I’m so happy to be returning to Hacienda Mosaico this Spring to teach an exciting new workshop. After training literally thousands of students over the past two and a  half decades, I have decided it’s a great time to offer instruction and  support for current and future mosaic instructors to take out into the  world. Many of my former students have expressed a desire to teach mosaic workshops; others are dipping their toes in and say they would love some guidance and support.

I’ve carefully developed this workshop in order to pass on my knowledge and experience to help educate great teachers.”  ~ Laurel True

Artist Laurel True brings 25 years of experience in mosaic instruction, curriculum development, and business of mosaics to an intensive workshop focusing on teacher training for mosaic artists at Hacienda Mosaico.

This 5-day intensive workshop provides participants with a unique opportunity to learn organization and methodology for running mosaic workshops for beginning and intermediate level students. The curriculum is suitable for both new and experienced educators who would like to refine or add mosaic techniques to their teaching practice.

Laurel will present organizational and marketing strategies, tips on designing workshops for students of various skill levels, and methodology for teaching mosaic techniques effectively using glass, ceramic, and mixed media.

Mosaic Instructor Training with Laurel TrueThe workshop includes hands-on studio time during which workshop participants will be guided in the creation of a set of useful teaching tools to take home, including a set of essential sample boards and visual aids that illustrate materials, techniques, color, pattern, and setting styles (these will be lightweight and easy to pack). Students will also experiment with various sample projects that illustrate how beginning and intermediate skills are developed.

An extensive training manual is included in the workshop fee, as well as sample design patterns and templates for class handouts. Resources will be given for ordering wholesale material, studio supplies, and tools.

Mornings will include discussions around the philosophy of teaching, personal goals and expectations, and group dynamics, as well as addressing joys and fears, aligning one’s teaching practice with core values and how teaching others can greatly contribute to our own well-being.

Students will come away from the workshop with the confidence and knowledge needed to be a great teacher.

Exterior Installations in Mexico with Bonnie Fitzgerald

1 Aug

Architectural Installations, Exterior Mosaics & Community Projects with Bonnie Hacienda Yucca CropBonnie Fitzgerald
January 15 -20, 2017
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
$1,875 Per Person, Double Occupancy

This is Bonnie Fitzgerald and Maverick Mosaics’ 5th trip to the Hacienda. We’re honored and very excited to be invited back to teach at the amazing educational environment that is Hacienda Mosaico.

Mosaics in MexicoThe primary focus of this workshop is exterior and large-scale mosaics and installations. For new students, this is the perfect opportunity to learn all about large-scale installations and community mosaic projects. Our workshop will guide you through the process of designing, fabricating and installing large-scale permanent mosaics for exterior or interior architectural settings. Each student will create several “studies” using various indirect mosaic techniques and a wide variety of materials. These exercise studies are invaluable, offering students’ time to explore materials and techniques that work best for projects they have in mind. Students are welcome to take their studies home for future reference. Additionally, you will gain experience in collaborative design, fabrication, and installation as a group by creating an architectural mosaic as a gift to the Hacienda.

Mosaics in Mexico

Mosaics in MexicoAlternate Focus: All students are welcome to create their own workshop and work on personal projects of any scale. Instructor will work with students one-on-one in advance to ensure you arrive at the Hacienda with appropriate materials. If you wish to create a personal mosaic to take home, you must submit a design concept to instructor in advance so materials can be sourced. Students are responsible for bringing their materials and the appropriate hand tools to cut their selected tesserae (mosaic pieces). Workshop includes a host of valuable hand-out materials and resource information.

All skill levels are welcome. Mosaic experience is helpful but not necessary.

Mosaics in MexicoA comprehensive presentation and lecture will cover creative and technical approaches best suited for community work. When many hands are involved there is magic to the art created, but there are lots of important planning steps to be considered. We will review the process of budgeting and bidding jobs, and share ideas for developing projects, recruiting and managing volunteers, and ways to gain the support of your local community. Students interested in exploring techniques to create a community based project will participate in a series of exercises to help master the appropriate method for their future projects. Materials list & instructions on packing will be sent after registration.

Mosaics in MexicoFor our gift mural to the Hacienda we’ll create a mosaic work in mixed materials and install the piece on Hacienda property using thin-set mortar. Everyone will gain valuable experience by participating in this hands-on exercise. In 2016 we created “Three Amigos” which are installed poolside to serenade you during meals!

Students are invited to a Hacienda welcome reception on Sunday evening, January 15. During our week together there will be tons of learning and lots of free time to explore Puerto Vallarta, shop or relax. After dinner each evening we offer optional instructor-supervised open studio. Students depart Saturday, January 21.

Mosaic Mural Making in Mexico: Sacred Peacock Mural with Laurel True
Hacienda Mosaico, Puerto Vallarta
January 24 – 30, 2016
$1,850 (based on double occupancy)

Usher in the New Year by entering the cosmos of the Sacred Art of Mural Making. Glittering glass, mirror and ceramic tile combine to create a multi-cultural celebration of creative expression and color. Get into the flow-state during a week of personal and collective making. Tap into your personal creative flow in the company of others on a similar path. No mosaic or art experience necessary.

Laurel True Installation Workshop

Join artist Laurel True at Hacienda Mosaico in Mexico for a Global Mosaic Project inspired by the sacred symbol of the peacock. One ancient myth has it that the peacock’s mission was to travel the world, seeking out and neutralizing negativity. The peacock was rewarded with beautiful colors.

This week-long workshop combines group mosaic mural-making with exploration of sacred symbols and inspiring texts to help students launch into a New Year of creative expansion and honoring our life paths.

Hacienda Mosaico Workshop

Workshop will include group discussions and personal exercises combined with hands-on mural making under the tutelage of Laurel True, who has been traveling the world, teaching and creating mosaic murals for almost 25 years.

Workshop participants will work with Laurel to create and install a magnificent peacock mural on the wall of Hacienda Mosaico. Students will also create a small piece to take home as a symbol for moving into a New Year.

Smaller, personal projects will focus on sacred symbols and finding personal meaning in our creative explorations.

True Mosaics Mexico

Mural Making Techniques  and lessons offered will benefit those who wish to pursue future projects, as well as those who want to engage in a collective, creative experience, culminating in a permanent piece of artwork.

Class will cover methods of design, color selection, and specific coding and sectioning methods required for large-scale projects, as well as planning techniques for successful architectural projects.

Students will receive instruction in precision cutting and setting techniques, working in the direct method using tile tape, and how to successfully combine on-and off-site mosaic work for larger projects.

Workshop will begin with welcome cocktails (or mocktails) and appetizers, and Laurel will offer an informal presentation and talk about her global projects around the world.
Some mornings and evenings will include optional group sessions and creative kickstarter activities. The studio space at Hacienda Mosaico is open 24 hours a day so that students can work independently after workshop hours.

Hope you can join us in Mexico!

Mosaic is unique to every student, and the goal in this workshop is to direct and assist each student to develop, find their own style, and create a beautiful work of art. Please contact the instructor for instructions. If you choose to work in Tempered Glass, you’ll complete a mosaic using the overlaying, collage techniques with metallic papers, tissue, foils, glitter, beads and more, creating abstract art with these recycled materials. Mixed Media Mosaics in Mexico with Heather Vollans

26 Aug

Mixed Media Mosaics in Mexico with Heather Vollans
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
April 12 – 18, 2015
$1500

Class Description

Mosaic Workshop MexicoThis mosaic class is all about working with unconventional materials and textures.  We’ll think “non-traditionally”  about what materials work for mosaic, and then produce a mixed media artwork using perhaps aluminum, copper, plastics, linoleum, wood, tire rubber, or beach detritus as well as the more usual mosaic materials such as tile/ceramic/glass.

Early in the week we’ll explore the streets of Puerto Vallarta — including hardware stores, markets and miscellaneous shops scouring for texture. Bring from home anything you would also like to include in your mosaic – metals, jewellery, plastics etc.  This class will particularly appeal to those who have a passion for unusual texture and love to collect.   You may choose to grout or leave your work ungrouted (or use a combination of both).   Acrylic paints can also be used to finish frames or incorporate into your mixed media work. Textured thinset is also an option.

Mosaic Workshop MexicoInstruction will include where to salvage for unusual objects, what to look for, what to avoid!!, and how to use those textures for creative designs.  Learn to see ordinary materials as possibilities for textural interest …copper pipe is not just for plumbing and linoleum is not just for floors!  We’ll talk about how to combine as few as 1-2 materials and, using a variety of cutting and design techniques, produce an effective mosaic.  Cutting instruction, adhesives, and tesserae will be discussed.  Class will also include techniques for cutting traditional mosaic materials for adding dimension, line, graduation of colour, etc.  Recipes for colouring thinset and grout will be included and take-home notes provided.  Wooden substrate will be provided, with extra bases available for additional work.  This course is suitable for those new to mosaic as well as those with some experience who want to explore “non-traditional” methods and materials.

Mosaic Workshop MexicoThere will also be extensive discussion about mosaic for outdoors – for climates colder than Mexico!  What adhesives work, what materials to use, substrates that work, and much more.

So start thinking about some ordinary things you could use for your mosaic — textural plastics, metals — whatever.  Be inspired by the art surrounding the beautiful tropical paradise of Sam’s Hacienda Mosaico, and create your own art with like-minded friends who love to salvage and re-purpose materials.  Enjoy incredible food, camaraderie and relaxed atmosphere at Hacienda Mosaico and go home inspired to do even more art!

Student List of Tools and Materials required for the class will be provided at registration.

Mosaic Kaleidoscope: Exploring Color, Inspiration and Creativity with Laurel True

16 Jul

Mosaic Kaleidoscope: Exploring Color, Inspiration and Creativity
with Laurel True
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
November 9 – 15, 2014
$1850

Mosaic Workshop MexicoIn this five-day workshop artist Laurel True will guide students through an inspirational week of creative exploration as they create a colorful, kaleidoscopic, radial mosaic that reflects their personal style and inspiration.  A kaleidoscope in its traditional form creates a symmetrical pattern of color and radiance through the placement and reflection of mirror and glass. Students will repurpose this concept under the guidance of True, as they design and create a 18” round kaleidoscopic mosaic using their choice of colored and stained glass, mirror, fused glass elements and more. True will demonstrate the use of various tools to achieve desired cuts and shapes, and offer tips for precision setting techniques for grouted and non-grouted mosaics. Various exercises will encourage students to stretch their creative potential and run with their inspirations as they explore color, materials and texture.  This unique workshop will focus both on mosaic creation and identifying and bringing into form our creative desires, opening participants to a more cosmic approach to art-making.

Mosaic Workshop MexicoThe final day of the workshop will include the group-creation of a Global Mosaic Project with participation by workshop participants and Hacienda Mosaico staff. The class will create a small mosaic kaleidoscope mural to be installed at Hacienda Mosaico, thus giving students a chance to experience personal and collective mosaic-making, as well as mosaic creation on both intimate and larger scales.

Trip to Syulita, a celebratory dinner on the beach, a gallery stroll, and fabulous dinners out in Puerto Vallarta.
